To start off a slew of fashion weeks all across various countries and cities, New York Fashion Week (Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), began with a bang: a winter snowstorm. In America’s fashion capital, New York’s best and most ingenious designers come together to display their collections.
Here are some of the most buzzed about moments of Fall Fashion Week, 2013…
1. Moncler’s 360 degree display…
The alpine label Moncler surprised attendees by starting off inside an ominous, dark arena; the show then began with a flicker of the lights, and then a huge reveal to about three hundred models lined up in Moncler’s signature outerwear. The models were stoic, eerily lit with dramatic green lighting; five rows of models at every angle was certainly an amazing show at New York Fashion Week.
2. Marchesa…
A label that is definitely on the rise, started by Georgina Chapman (seen recently on Project Runway) and Keren Craig, brought romance to their fall collection, while also bringing a certain edge to their somewhat chaotic runway setup.
3. Betsey Johnson…
Perhaps one of the smartest decisions of any label, Betsey Johnson has brought a new dimension to her famously eccentric brand: active wear. Johnson’s wildness was seen, undeniably, on the runway when she, and many models, debuted her newest collection. As you would expect, the runway was decked in pink and littered with bottles of champagne; models strutted in the active wear with cell phones in their hands and aerobics bags on their arms, in true ‘New Yorke’r fashion. Johnson’s collection was definitely the most fun: the crowning moment of the entire show was when Johnson came out to bow, and then led the models in a work out session on the runway!
4. Marc Jacobs…
One of the hottest tickets for the week was undoubtedly Marc Jacobs, where models walked in a circular area underneath a blaring, obtrusive “rising sun”—a large yellow light shining onto the models. The arena resembled a warehouse: this particular venue gave light in a dark place to Marc Jacob’s mastery of beautiful design.
5. Kate Spade New York’s Preview Event…
Kate Spade, a Holy Cross favorite, wowed fashionistas during their signature “preview” event. Big hair and cute prints were the game for fall 2013. This preview event is included in this list for a number of reasons; however, the most important being the way Kate Spade personalized their collection with a New York motif. New York is Kate Spade’s origin, and it is clear that the KSNY theme was clear throughout, with “TAXI” makeup bags and clutches and busy prints, no doubt a metaphor for New York’s hustle and bustle. Kate Spade celebrates a twentieth anniversary this year, and Brad Goreski, Execute Brand Stylist, calls it a collection “for the party girl.”
I cannot forget to include how attendees of this season’s events were able to brave Winter Storm Nemo in heels; the street style alone could have been a jaw dropping moment. Because of this and so much more, these five reasons only scratch the surface of “jaw dropping moments” at New York Fashion Week.
Honorable mentions include Proenza Schouler’s bold takes on the fall nude colors and black and white motifs, Ralph Lauren’s sleek fall collection, and Rodarte’s electric runway and beautiful collection.
Here’s to London Fashion Week (and Paris and Milan and Tokyo...)!
