Mock Trial has once again proved that Holy Cross can dominate in the courtroom as well as on the sports turf. Only weeks after defeating Colgate 31-24 in Football, Holy Cross' Mock Trial Team Red traveled to Hamilton, New York to capture first place in the Colgate Classic Tournament.
Competing with teams from Amherst, Swarthmore, Villanova and NYU, Team Red dominated the tournament with an overall record of 7-1 rulings, meaning that in four rounds of trials, seven judges scored them as superior to their opposing team.
Additionally, Erica Rocha '11 and Pete Walsh '13 won individual awards as ‘best witness' and ‘best attorney' respectively. Rocha was universally praised by all judges for her moving testimony as Andy Davis, the mother of plaintiff victim Joey Davis. Witnesses such as Rocha must not only give an effective ‘direct' statement, but hold their own against the opponent's attorney on cross-examination.
Pete Walsh '13 was recognized for his skill as a plaintiff attorney, demonstrated in his impressive opening argument as well as his direct examination of expert witness Dr. Chase Tuchmont (played by Brendan Sullivan '11) and his brutal cross-examination of opposing expert Dr. Reese Gardner.
However, victory in Mock Trial, much like in athletics, relies on the combined effort of the entire team, and each member put forth an extraordinary effort to win. Team Red additionally owes its victory to the leadership of co-captains Brendan Sullivan '11 and DJ Kernisant '11. Next week Mock Trial Team White will compete at Tufts; in the meantime feel free to check out their rapidly growing trophy cabinet in the entrance to Stein!
