Last weekend both the Men's and Women's track and field team lost to the University of Maine in dual meets. However, each team managed three first-place finishes respectively. For the men's team junior Brendan Kearney won first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.56. Sophomore David LoBue captured first in the 500 meter run with a time of 69.49. Senior Bill Phelan won the 35 pound weight throw by matching his personal record of 52'9. His throw was the sixth best in the Patriot League this season. On the women's side, senior Andrea Madden set the standard with a first place finish in the weight throw. Her throw of 55'1 was the second best in the Patriot League this winter in addition to being the longest throw of her career. Sophomore Courtney Walls won her pole vault event with a career-best jump of 10'6". Meghan Carrette, also a sophomore, ran to a first place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.61.
The Crusaders have seen other standout performances this winter. Senior Bill Phelan comments, "The throwers as a whole have surpassed their expectations for the season. The two highlights have been Nick Carr and Dwayne Henclewood." According to Phelan, Nick Carr is throwing the weight better than any freshman in the last seven years. Senior Dwayne Henclewood won both Patriot League and ECAC Field Athlete of the week. Dwayne is the only Holy Cross athlete to earn these titles this season. The thrower won the titles by placing second at the Adidas Boston Indoor Games in the shot put event. The throw, Henclewood's best of the season, earned him second place, just 0.46 meters out of first.
The women's team has also seen strong performances turned out this winter. Captain Andrea Madden, a thrower, has qualified for both the ECAC and New England Championships. The senior is less than a foot off the Holy Cross record in the weight throw and has finished first place in the event in every scoring meet the team has had. Another captain, Julia Gillis, also qualified for the New England Championships in the 1000m event. A duo of sophomore sprinters, Emily Winacoo and Meghan Carrette, have each qualified for the New England Championships, Winacoo in the 500m sprint and Carrette for the high jump.
An interesting subplot has developed on the women's indoor team this season. A trio of pole vaulters are all competing to reset the Holy Cross record. Sophomore Jessica Fallon, the current school record holder, is 6" off of the new record. Also close to setting a new record are Courtney Walls (6") and Kaitlin Palmer (1 foot). Women's coach Egetta Alfonso discussed the trio, "All three have helped significantly in our meets, usually finishing in the top 5 at all of our scoring meets."
The Crusaders will once again be in action this weekend when they compete in the Valentine's Day Classic in Boston.
