Last Monday, February 10, Holy Cross Dining confirmed the rumors about the upcoming Kimball Dining Hall renovation project through an email to the student body. The plans are to renovate the Main Dining Room’s serving area. Construction will begin following the conclusion of the spring semester, and the new serving area should be completed in time for students’ arrival in August. Partners by Design, a Massachusetts-based food services design firm, is commissioned to take on the project.
“I am a frequent Kimball-goer. Ever since freshmen year, I have noticed a variety of small changes, but I am looking forward to coming back after I graduate and seeing that big changes have been made to make Kimball an even better dining option,” said Jennifer Lillis, ’14.
The serving area is the focus of the renovations. HC Dining listed “brick oven pizza, a super-food-inspired station, and handcrafted deli sandwiches” as a few of the features that this project will integrate. The current plans also call for an Allergy-Free Station, a Stir-Fry Station, a Classics Station, a Breakfast Station, a Grill Station, a Pasta Station, a Bread/Soup Station, as well as a Dessert Station.
“I am especially excited for the brick oven pizza and for the opportunity to view my food being made in front of me right before I eat it,” said Tricia Gianfagna, ’16.
Elizabeth Fiorentino, ’16, commented, “The brick oven pizza will be a nice touch—I can’t wait to see this all come to fruition.”
Plans for this project have been underway for some time now—two and a half years. However, HC Dining says that it is always eager to hear students’ opinions as the project moves towards its final stages.
In the first of two scheduled student feedback sessions, the lunchtime crowd at Kimball last Wednesday, February 12, had the opportunity to share their favorite meals with the Dining staff. These suggestions are being taken into account as Kimball plans its new menus for the upcoming school year. On Wednesday, February 26, in the Main Dining Room, students will have another opportunity to make suggestions for next year’s menu.
“I am so excited Kimball is undergoing a renovation under the guidance of the students’ suggestions,” said Gianfagna.
With this renovation taking place months from now, big changes are already in place
at other Holy Cross Dining locations. Regarding the changes, SGA Director of Dining and Auxiliary Services, Katie Werbner, ’14, stated, “I have been working with Dining throughout the year to have healthier options around campus…such as the stir-fry and rice bowls that have been instituted in Crossroads.
“Additionally, the weekend hours for Cool Beans have been extended to open earlier—which makes these facilities more accessible for students.”
