Vogue Madness

This month's issue of the world-renowned magazine, Vogue, has been wrought with controversy. It is surprising to think that such an admired periodical would have problems, especially being cornerstone of fashion for over one hundred years. If you haven't yet, pick up a copy for yourself, and allow me to take you on a journey through the glitches found in the April 2014 issue of Vogue.

Famous couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, also known as "Kimye," are featured on this month's cover. Kardashian is shown wearing an ivory strapless techno-duchesse satin gown from the Lanvin Blanch Collection by Alber Elbaz, while West embraces her in his arms. It is perplexing that this glamorous beauty wears simple makeup and no jewelry, except, of course, her custom made $1.25 million ring designed by close family friend, Lorraine Shwartz. Controversy broke out as soon as the cover stars were revealed. Rumors stated that West purchased the cover for Kardashian, and many felt that she should not be rewarded for her ill-fated past. Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, defends the couple in her "Letter From the Editor," exclaiming, "As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue's cover. He did nothing of the sort." Kimye may not be a power couple like their close friends Beyoncé and Jay-Z, but they were fairly chosen to be showcased on the magazine cover. Kardashian's famous hourglass figure seems fitting for this month's "Shape Issue."

When you flip to the cover story, you will come across Annie Leibovitz's photograph, "Baby Makes Three," which presents Kimye cuddling with their baby girl, North West.  Individuals have questioned the appropriateness of this picture, arguing that North should not be featured partly nude at such a young age, especially with the  knowledge of Kardashian's raunchy past. There is also controversy surrounding Leibovitz's photograph, "Screen Time," which showcases a picture of West, taking a picture of Kardashian, taking a picture with North. All three subjects are placed in front of a mirror, but it is odd that West's reflection does not show up in the photo. It is clear that this picture was poorly photo-shopped and staged.

It is ironic to think that all these problems would rise to the surface when Kardashian finally makes her Vogue debut. Oh, and did I mention that pages 112-117 of the magazine are missing as well? Whether the family is deserving of this upheaval is a choice for the audience to make. But, I'm very sure that Vogue's spectators will be on the lookout to see that the May 2014 issue demonstrates much improvement, and perhaps, a change of staff members.
